Who coined the phrase “Heavy Metal”? What band started the sound that would be called “Heavy Metal”? For me, the band that started it was Black Sabbath. Other bands in that time period played heavy rock music, but Sabbath took it to the next level. Everyone has an opinion. To me, no one has the correct or wrong answer. It’s up to individual interpretation.
