Milli Vanilli was one of the greatest bands that never actually existed. In 1988 the band was launched by producer Frank Farian. The band featured Rob and Fab. Two cool looking cats with great voices. After a short lived career, the band was outed as lip syncing all of the songs. In fact, not only did they lip sync the songs in the videos and on tour, they actually didn’t sing on any of them. Singers listed as back up vocalists on the record were the real singers on the songs.
To restore their careers, Frank Farian, the mastermind behind the band, agreed to produce a new Milli Vanilli album with Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus on lead vocals in 1997. On the eve of the new album’s promotional tour on 2 April 1998, Pilatus was found dead of a suspected alcohol and prescription drug overdose in a hotel room in Frankfurt, Germany. His death was ruled accidental. A sad end of a career that could have been.
I was not a fan of the bands music but I acknowledge the contribution. The funny thing is that so many bands do back track vocals and guitars now and no one seems to be bothered by it.
One of the real singers on the album has just recently passed away. I though it was an interesting story. Check it out.
