The Crosses Will Stay

They bear no indication of who put them there, but their message is clear.  Ten white crosses appeared Monday commemorating the people who’ve died in mass shootings over the last year and a half. The 10 crosses, in Tower Square at 13th and P Streets, represent 10 shootings. The first is for the Las Vegas tragedy on October 1, 2017 and the last has the most recent Dayton, Ohio shooting on Sunday, August 4. All of the crosses have the date, flowers, and how many people were killed.

Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird said in a statement late Tuesday that the display will be allowed to remain until sunset Thursday, the time at which the order to fly flags at half staff is lifted.

“Lincoln is a compassionate city”, the Mayor said.  “We share in the grief of others across the country, and we plan to leave this memorial up until the flags are raised from half-staff.”
