LINCOLN–(KFOR Nov. 22)–Lincoln Police continue to stress why it’s important to keep your vehicles locked and valuables out, either at night or anytime and when you are warming up your car during the winter months.

LPD public information manager Erika Thomas on Friday said between January 1 and Nov. 21, 130 guns have been stolen in Lincoln, compared to 126 in all of 2023.  Thomas says 47 of the 130 stolen guns were out of vehicles, with almost 94% of them being left unlocked. That’s up from about 70% in 2021.

Thomas says less than 25% of the guns stolen from vehicles this year have been recovered. Those recovered include one from a homicide in Omaha, one recovered from a stolen vehicle, so there is evidence stolen guns are being used to commit more crimes.
