STATE TRACK MEET: East’s Miles Wins Gold, Waverly Boys and Norris Girls Win Team Titles

LINCOLN–(KFOR May 19)–Lincoln East sprinter and North Dakota State track commit Gabe Miles won the gold in the Class A boys 400 meter race after finishing 3rd in the 200 on Thursday at the NSAA State Track Meet in Omaha.
East finished third in the Boys Class A team standings and Creighton Prep won the team title.
Papillion-LaVista South captured the Class A girls team championship. Individually, East’s Berlyn Schutz won the 800 meter race with a time of 2:11.57 and won the mile race with a state meet record time of 4:50.09.
In the Class A girls 100 meter hurdles, it was a close finish with Pius X’s Kate Campos winning with a time of 14.89 seconds, edging Northeast’s Laney Songster and Grand Island’s Emma Rauch-Word, who ran 14.90 seconds. Campos also won the gold in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 44.03 seconds.
Waverly boys won the Class B team title and the Norris girls won the team championship in Class B.
The Viking boys were helped to the team title, thanks in part to the 400 meter relay team of Preston Harms, Daniel Kasparek, Grant Schere and Austin Neddenriep, who finished with a state and meet record time of 42.11 seconds. Waverly’s mile relay team also won gold with Kasparek, Braxton Smith, Drew Moser and AJ Heffelfinger and finished with a time of 3:22.07. Smith won the boys 400 meter race with a time of 48.07 seconds.
Other notable performances included Waverly’s girls mile relay team of Joslyn Rice, Emma Steffensen, Millie Waldo, Alonna Depalma, who set a state and meet record with a time of 3:56.89. The Vikings’ 400 meter relay team of Rice, Depalma, Tahya Mrsny and Alyssa Folds won with a time of 48.64 seconds. Depalma also won the girls 400 meter race with a meet record time of 56.38 seconds.
Norris’ Taylor Bredthauer won the girls long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 8-and-a-half inches.
