LINCOLN–(KFOR Sept. 5)–A public hearing will be held Thursday evening on plans to build a viaduct over the railroad tracks in the area of 33rd and Cornhusker Highway and Adams Street.

The hearing will happen from 5pm to 7pm this evening at the Country Inn and Suites off of 27th and Folkways Boulevard.  The project would build a viaduct that would put 33rd Street over the railroad tracks and back down to meet with Cornhusker Highway at about 31st Street.  Adams Street would come down and parallel the tracks, then go up in the air and meet with 33rd Street, south of the tracks.

Roger Figard is with the Railroad Transportation Safety District and says it will impact businesses in the area from 29th Street over to 35th Street to the east, from Huntington Avenue on the south to Cornhusker Highway on the north.  This will not impact any residences in the area.

Figard tells KFOR News the total cost of the project is around $120-million.

“That’s coming from a combination of state, federal and local dollars,” Figard added.  “We’re also applying for about a $67-million grant from the federal government to help pay for that.”

The RTSD is hoping to get approval from the Nebraska Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration by the spring of 2025.  It could be 2027 before work begins and another two years until the viaduct is completed.
