NDOT Announces Next Step towards Construction of Lincoln South Beltway

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration have approved the necessary documents for the Lincoln South Beltway project to advance on to the official procurement process. The NDOT will solicit bids from contractors with a deadline of December 12.  Following the Department’s analysis of the bids, an award will be made to support a 2020 construction start date.

The Lincoln South Beltway will improve regional connectivity by creating an east to west four-lane freeway south of Lincoln, linking US-77 and N-2.  It is designed to reduce conflicts between local and through traffic, including heavy truck traffic, in Lincoln.  The freeway will divert freight trucks from the local urban transportation network, which will help increase safety and mobility in local travel.

During the official advertisement period, the project plans and bid proposal will be available for contractor review to assist with bid submittal.  Two bidder’s conferences have been scheduled for October 17 and November 13 to provide potential bidders with project information and to answer contractor questions. Bids will be received until 1:30 p.m. on December 12, at which time they will be opened and read publicly.  Bid analysis, award, contract execution and financial close will follow the opening of bids.

Announcement of the official notice to contractors is on schedule with the accelerated timeline the Department has been pursuing to support opening the freeway in three years with full project completion in fall of 2024.  Last December, the NDOT announced completion of the project’s final design and have been working on right-of-way acquisition and utility relocation over the last several months.  In February, the Department announced it would build the project over four years rather than the original eight with the freeway being open to traffic in as little as three years to bring the benefits of the beltway to the region as quickly as possible.
