LINCOLN–(News Release Nov. 26)–Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird and local business leaders today urged residents to support the community during the holidays by shopping locally. Speaking at Paper Kite, 4744 Prescott Ave., the mayor also issued a proclamation declaring Saturday, November 30, as Small Business Saturday in Lincoln and highlighted the benefits of supporting Lincoln’s vibrant economy.

“When we shop local, we directly support our community’s economic success by supporting local employers and the jobs they create for our neighbors, by keeping money circulating in our city, and by investing in the businesses that are most invested in our community’s future. So, before you go online and fill your cart, check out what’s down the block that can fill your heart,” Mayor Gaylor Baird said.

Joining the mayor at the event were Meg Hasselbalch, CEO of Paper Kite; Todd Ogden, President and CEO, Downtown Lincoln Association; Jason Ball, President, Lincoln Chamber of Commerce; Travis Filing, President, Lincoln Independent Business Association; Rich Otto, Advocacy Coordinator, Nebraska Retail Federation and City Council member Justin Carlson.

Hasselbalch said supporting small businesses entails more than spending money. She encouraged residents to attend special events hosted by local retailers, share their great experiences with friends and family, and support those businesses through social media.

“Small businesses may be small. But that just gives us an opportunity to use our care, creativity, and dedication to our community to make a truly big impact on Lincoln,” Hasselbalch said. “We are in business because we love Lincoln. We love creating spaces where people feel welcome. Where people want to visit and linger. And where residents and visitors alike can explore and be inspired.”
