LPS Board Approves Of Field Turf Project For Den Hartog Baseball Field

LINCOLN–(KFOR July 31)–Baseball games played at Den Hartog Field will soon use a new playing surface. About $950,000 was approved by Lincoln School Board members Tuesday night for field turf to be installed.

LPS superintendent for business affairs Liz Standish says this project will be funded through a combination of the district’s depreciation fund, essentially the district’s savings accounts for major purchases, the athletic fund generated through ticket sales to LPS events, and the special grants fund.

“We do think we have sufficient dollars dedicated from those revenue streams that are not general fund funded, that are appropriate for the project,” Standish told School Board members.

LPS operations director Scott Wieskamp says this will help allow more games to be played, especially after inclement weather. This past spring with the late snow fall in March is a prime example, where teams couldn’t get out and play games right away.

“They didn’t have the opportunities that they would have, if we would have had a turf field,” Wieskamp said.

With approval by the School Board, work will get underway this fall to put in the field turf.  Den Hartog Field is the only varsity level baseball field LPS owns.  The district also works with the City of Lincoln to use Sherman and Densmore Fields during the spring baseball season.
