HUSKER FOOTBALL: Buschini and Wright Earn Blackshirt Practice Jerseys
Two players were awarded blackshirts during the Nebraska football team’s bye week – Ceyair Wright and Brian Buschini. Wright is a junior cornerback, while Buschini is a fifth-year senior punter. Head coach Matt Rhule on Monday said Buschini’s blackshirt came at the request of his teammates. The punter was named the Big Ten’s Special Teams Player of the Week following his performance against Rutgers. Buschini had five punts against the Scarlet Knights, which averaged 50.2 yards. Wright, meanwhile, has started the last two games in place of Tommi Hill, who has a foot injury.
Omaha Benson Forfeits Remainder of 2024 Football Schedule
Omaha Benson has forfeited the final two weeks of their football season, including this Thursday night’s game with Lincoln Southeast, due to low participation numbers on the football team. This will count as a district win for Southeast. Benson would have ended up playing top-ranked Millard South next week. The Bunnies finish the season at 0-7.
HUSKER BASEBALL: Red Leads White in Fall Series
In the fall scrimmage series for the Nebraska baseball team, the Red team used a seven-run outburst in the bottom of the fourth inning to post a 7-5 win and grab a 2-1 lead in the Red-White Series on Monday afternoon at Hawks Field.
GIRLS STATE GOLF UPDATE
Omaha Marian is the team leader at the Class A State Girls Golf Meet in Grand Island after Monday’s opening round, while Lincoln Southwest is second, Omaha Westside is third and Lincoln East is fourth. Southwest’s Eden Larson is the leader individually, at two over. Full results will be posted on Wednesday morning.
Bluejays Preseason Ranked in AP Top 25 Men’s College Basketball Poll
The Associated Press Men’s Top 25 College Basketball preseason poll was released on Monday and Kansas is the No. 1 team. Alabama, UConn, Houston and Iowa State round out the top five. Creighton is preseason ranked at No. 15. The Bluejays have now been ranked 143 times in program history, with 115 of those under the direction of head coach Greg McDermott. Creighton is 175-73 all-time as a ranked team, including a 141-61 mark under McDermott.
