OMAHA–(KFOR Nov. 8)–Omaha Skutt took to the air with some big first half plays and never looked back at Waverly.

The SkyHawks soared to a 31-point first half lead and held on for a 38-21 victory over the Vikings in the quarterfinals of the NSAA Class B State Football playoffs at Moylan Field on Friday night.

Skutt (10-1) now faces Class B No. 2 seed and undefeated Seward in next week’s semifinal at Concordia University, after the Bluejays rallied back Friday night to defeat Gretna East.

The SkyHawks within the first two minutes of the game scored on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Van Dyke to Nate Christensen.  On the next Skutt possession, Van Dyke found Leo Bailey on a 19-yard scoring strike to put the SkyHawks up 14-0.

Waverly (8-3) countered with a 76-yard drive that started at the end of the first quarter and was capped off on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Carter McMillan to Brayden Canoyer with 8:55 left in the second quarter to put the Vikings on the board, trailing 14-7.

Ten seconds later, Skutt responded with Gage Guenther’s 65-yard touchdown run that extended the lead to 21-7.  From there, the SkyHawks soared.

Van Dyke later found wide-receiver Joe Kolega on a 20-yard touchdown pass and after stopping Waverly on fourth down, Skutt scored again when Van Dyke connected with Kolega on a 47-yard scoring toss to make it 35-7.

Kolega later added a 43-yard field goal with 17 seconds left before halftime and Skutt led 38-7.

Waverly opened the third quarter with an 80-yard drive that took nine plays and was capped on a 20-yard scoring run from Canoyer and McMillan scored on a short nine-yard run with one second left in the game.

It’s the fourth time over the past seven seasons that Skutt ended Waverly’s season in the playoffs, including semifinal victories for the SkyHawks in 2018, 2019 and 2023.
