LINCOLN–(KFOR Sept. 30)–There is no rain in sight for the next seven days, according to the latest forecast. It also means you should be diligent in preventing grass fires from happening and with the dry conditions and windy weather, one spark from a tossed cigarette could cause problems.

“(Cigarettes) can smolder for a long time and cause problems later,” Lincoln Fire and Rescue spokesperson MJ Lierman said on Monday.

When it comes to using fire pits in the evenings, Lierman says have a water source nearby and keep it 25 to 30 feet away from your home or any building.

Fire crews from six rural departments on Sunday battled a large fire that left 55 acres worth of trees and 10 acres of corn burned in an area near 46th and Bennet Road, in southern Lancaster County.

According to KFOR’s media partner, 10/11 News, the brush fire was caused by a non-burn permit fire.  The challenges for firefighters were dry conditions and rough terrain.

No reports of any injuries.
